Methodology, software & labs

How you'll learn

The programme is delivered 100% online on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within each intake, so it fits around your job.

Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is Zemax OpticStudio, COMSOL Multiphysics, RP Fiber Power, MATLAB and Python NumPy, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Real procedures are studied, including fibre laser characterisation, beam profile measurements and risk assessments of laser cells. Assessment is continuous by module, plus the final capstone project.

Standards covered: IEC 60825-1, ISO 11146, ISO 11553-1, EN 207, Royal Decree 486/2010, ISO/ASTM 52900, ANSI Z136.1.

Assigned technical tutor:every module ends with a deliverable that your tutor marks individually.
Standards-based learning:guided reading of IEC 60825-1, ISO 11146 and ISO 11553-1 applied to real cases, not as a theoretical annex.
Industry software:Zemax OpticStudio, COMSOL Multiphysics, RP Fiber Power, MATLAB, Python NumPy, in free, academic or evaluation versions.
Final project:a laser engineering project covering source selection, optical design, thermal management, integration and safety assessment, reviewed by your tutor.
Flexible format:100% online, no fixed timetables, compatible with full-time work.
Capstone project

Build it end to end

Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.

Build a rate-equation model of a laser in Python.
Fibre laser characterisation
Characterise the output of a high-power fibre laser.
Beam profile measurement
Measure the beam profile and M² factor according to ISO 11146.
Laser cell risk assessment
Carry out a risk assessment of a laser cell under IEC 60825-1.
Final project
