Methodology, software & labs

How you'll learn

A 100% online programme on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within each intake, so you can combine it with your job.

Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is Minitab, nCode DesignLife, VGSTUDIO MAX, ANSYS Mechanical and Python (SciPy), in free, academic or evaluation versions. Exercises are based on real procedures: tensile testing in different orientations, fatigue testing with defects detected by tomography and the calculation of statistical allowables. Assessment is continuous by module, plus the final project.

Standards covered: ASTM E8/E8M, ASTM E466, ASTM E399, ISO/ASTM 52909, ASTM F3122, ASTM E1441, MMPDS.

Assigned technical tutor:every module ends with a deliverable that your tutor marks individually.
Standards-based learning:guided reading of ASTM E8/E8M, ASTM E466, ASTM E399 and ISO/ASTM 52909 applied to real cases, not as a theoretical annex.
Industry software:Minitab, nCode DesignLife, VGSTUDIO MAX, ANSYS Mechanical and Python (SciPy), in free, academic or evaluation versions.
Final project:a complete mechanical characterisation and reliability assessment of an additively manufactured part, from test plan to statistical analysis, reviewed by your tutor.
Flexible format:100% online, no fixed timetables, compatible with full-time work.
Capstone project

Build it end to end

Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.

Material, part and test plan
Select the additive material and part, and design the test plan.
Static and fatigue tests
Run tensile and fatigue tests according to ASTM E8 and ASTM E466 in several orientations.
Defect characterisation
Characterise porosity and defects by computed tomography under ASTM E1441.
Statistics and reliability
Calculate statistical allowables and assess the structural reliability of the part.
Final project
Present the conclusions and report for final review with your tutor.
