Battery Management System (BMS) course — studying from Canada

Canada is building capacity in electric vehicles, battery manufacturing and hydrogen technologies, supported by federal and provincial investment. Ontario's automotive corridor is attracting battery cell and materials projects, while Québec and British Columbia have strong hydro-powered grids and clean technology clusters. Hydrogen research and fuel cell development are active in Alberta, Ontario and British Columbia. Engineers work on battery systems, charging infrastructure, power electronics and energy storage, with employers including automakers, cell manufacturers and utilities.

Fees for Canada: 1,240 CA$ (Canadian dollar), with instalments and employer sponsorship available.

Methodology, software & labs

How you'll learn

100% online training on the SEIUM Institute campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within each intake, so you can combine it with full-time work.

Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape Battery, Vector CANalyzer and dSPACE SCALEXIO, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Exercises are based on real procedures: designing the SoC estimation algorithm for a pack, HIL validation of BMS protections and diagnosing BMS communication faults.

Assessment is continuous, module by module, plus the final project.

Standards covered: ISO 26262; IEC 62619; UL 1973; UNECE Regulation No. 100; IEC 61508; ISO 6469-1; Regulation (EU) 2023/1542; SAE J2929.

Assigned technical tutor:every module ends with a deliverable that your tutor marks individually.
Standards-based learning:guided reading of ISO 26262, IEC 62619 and UL 1973 applied to real cases, not as a theoretical annex.
Industry software:MATLAB/Simulink, Simscape Battery, Vector CANalyzer and dSPACE SCALEXIO, in free, academic or evaluation versions.
Final project:a complete BMS concept for a target pack, from hardware architecture and SoC algorithm to functional safety and HIL verification, reviewed by your tutor.
Flexible format:100% online, no fixed timetables, compatible with full-time work.

A SEIUM Institute certificate, awarded on passing the continuous assessment and the final project. It is SEIUM's own qualification, not an official state degree; its recognition depends on the programme completed and the regulations of each country.

Yes. Modules passed are recognised in a higher programme in the same area (postgraduate diploma or master's). Ask about the recognition policy when you enrol.

No prior qualification is required: you only need an internet connection, a computer able to run the programme's software and English sufficient to read technical standards.

Start dates are set by SEIUM's faculty for each intake. Our admissions team will confirm the next available date when you apply.
