Master’s in PLM/PDM for Design — studying from Australia

Product design and human-machine interface work is important across Australian industries, from consumer goods and medical devices to mining equipment and transport systems. Designers and engineers collaborate on usability, ergonomics and visual interfaces, with growing attention to accessibility standards and user research. Australia has active design communities in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, supported by universities and design agencies. Employers include manufacturers, software companies, consultancies and in-house product teams in large organisations.

Fees for Australia: A$14,200 (AUD), with instalments and employer sponsorship available.

Relevant bodies in Australia

  • Design Institute of Australia (DIA)
  • Standards Australia
  • Australian Human Factors Association
  • Web Content Accessibility Guidelines consortium (W3C) — Australian adoption via Digital Transformation Agency

Typical roles

  • Product Designer
  • UX/HMI Designer
  • Industrial Designer
  • Human Factors Engineer

Questions from Australia

Does a SEIUM qualification count for professional design recognition in Australia?

Australian design practice is recognised through bodies such as the Design Institute of Australia, which runs professional membership, and Engineers Australia covers engineering-related design. SEIUM's private qualifications are not accredited by these bodies. Employers and the relevant body decide whether it counts toward recognition.

Which Australian employers need HMI and product design skills?

Australia has product design studios, software companies, automotive and medical device firms, and consultancies needing interface and product designers. Employers usually look closely at your portfolio and user research work. A SEIUM qualification may complement this, but its weight is determined by each employer.

Can I study this part-time from Australia and what language level is needed?

Yes, the courses are 100% online, so you can study from home across Australia without a student visa. Teaching is in English, so you need solid English proficiency. Durations range from 300 to 1,900 hours, with an assigned technical tutor, instalment payments, and possible employer sponsorship.

How you'll learn

100% online training on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within each intake, so you can combine the programme with your job.

Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, 3DEXPERIENCE ENOVIA, Aras Innovator and SolidWorks PDM, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Testing is studied on real procedures for change process simulation, pilot CAD data migrations and PLM platform configuration. Assessment is continuous by module, plus the final Master's Thesis.

Standards covered: ISO 10303 (STEP), ISO 10007, ISO 16792, ASME Y14.41, ISO 14306 (JT), ISO 9001, Regulation (EU) 2024/1781.

Assigned technical tutor:every module ends with a deliverable that your tutor marks individually.
Standards-based learning:guided reading of ISO 10303 (STEP), ISO 10007 and ISO 16792 applied to real cases, not as a theoretical annex.
Industry software:Siemens Teamcenter, PTC Windchill, 3DEXPERIENCE ENOVIA, Aras Innovator and SolidWorks PDM, in free, academic or evaluation versions.
Master's Thesis with defence:a complete PLM roadmap for an organisation, from target data model and change processes to migration plan and success indicators, defended before a panel.
Flexible format:100% online, no fixed timetables, compatible with full-time work.
