Methodology, software & labs

How you'll learn

100% online training on the SEIUM campus, with downloadable material, recorded classes and an assigned technical tutor. There are no fixed timetables: you progress at your own pace within the intake, so you can combine it with your job.

Each module combines theory, guided reading of the original standard and applied exercises. The working software is dump1090, GNU Radio, pyModeS, Wireshark and Virtual Radar Server, in free, academic or evaluation versions. Testing is studied on real procedures for capturing 1090 ES messages with an SDR receiver, analysing the coverage of a ground station and assessing the integrity of reported positions. Assessment is continuous by module, plus the final project.

Standards covered: RTCA DO-260B / EUROCAE ED-102A, Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1207/2011, 14 CFR 91.225 and 91.227, EASA CS-ACNS, RTCA DO-282B, ICAO Annex 10, Volume IV, ICAO Doc 9871, FAA AC 20-165B.

Assigned technical tutor:every module ends with a deliverable that your tutor marks individually.
Standards-based learning:guided reading of RTCA DO-260B / EUROCAE ED-102A, Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 1207/2011 and 14 CFR 91.225 and 91.227 applied to real cases, not as a theoretical annex.
Industry software:dump1090, GNU Radio, pyModeS, Wireshark and Virtual Radar Server, in free, academic or evaluation versions.
Final project:an ADS-B surveillance study built on data captured with your own receiver, from decoding to an operational improvement proposal, reviewed by your tutor.
Flexible format:100% online, no fixed timetables, compatible with full-time work.
Capstone project

Build it end to end

Your final project follows the real engineering workflow, step by step, reviewed by your tutor.

Define the study area
Define the study area and set up your own receiver to capture data.
Decode and store messages
Decode the captured 1090 ES messages and store them for analysis.
Analyse coverage and quality
Analyse coverage and data quality and assess position integrity.
Detect anomalies
Detect anomalies and spoofing attempts in the dataset.
Final project
Draw up an operational improvement proposal with conclusions and present it for final review with your tutor.

The programme totals 300 hours over 3 months. You set your own pace within each intake, and your tutor helps you plan the workload around your job.

You work with dump1090, GNU Radio, pyModeS, Wireshark and Virtual Radar Server, using free, academic or evaluation versions. Your tutor indicates the free alternative wherever one exists.

A SEIUM Institute certificate, awarded on passing the continuous assessment and the final project. It is SEIUM's own qualification, not an official state degree; its recognition depends on the programme completed and the regulations of each country.

Yes. Modules passed are recognised in a higher programme in the same area (postgraduate diploma or master's). Ask about the recognition policy when you enrol.

No prior qualification is required: you only need an internet connection, a computer able to run the programme software and English sufficient to read technical standards.

Start dates are set by SEIUM's faculty for each intake. Our admissions team will confirm the next available date when you apply.
